SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY
Our biggest fundraising to date has been to support the Canaan Trust's new female house Aspire. Over the year we raised £1507.35 by a combination of Christmas and Summer Fayre, raffles, book sales etc.
LEWI members continue to support the community.
At our March meeting we will be collecting Easter Eggs for Operation Orphan.

December involved supporting the community in different ways.
30 care boxes were collected for Nottingham Framework and a tremendous amount of food collected for the local food bank.
LEWI members made Christmas Tree decorations from non-recyclable materials for the 2018 tree festival at St Laurence Church.
The stunning tree was on display at the church from Thursday 29th November until Saturday 1st December.
In November we collected more adult winter coats and warm jumpers for the soup kitchen in Derby, story sacks for Zoe's forthcoming visit to India, and hand painted Remembrance Rocks to commemorate men and women from Long Eaton who lost their lives in the First World War.
LEWI member Stephanie Burton laid a wreath on behalf of Long Eaton WI at the Commemorative event on 11th November .
In October we again collected donations of adult winter coats and jumpers for the soup kitchen in Derby; more used greetings cards for the Cystinosis Foundation (we have now collected an amazing 1483 cards in total), and used spectacles, necklaces and new biros for David Pinney's Africa visit. Zoe is off to India in January and will be taking story sacks for the children she will be working with. Several LEWI members have volunteered to make the sturdy drawstring bags to hold the books and resources Zoe will be taking with her.
At our September meeting we collected donations for the Long Eaton and Sawley Foodbank.
Anita and Margaret collected donations of good quality, clean adult winter coats and jumpers to take to the soup kitchen in Derby.
Lynn collected another 423 used greetings cards and card making material for recycling to raise funds for the Cystinosis Foundation. A staggering 410 cards were handed over at the August meeting, thank you so much for your support.
Also at our August meeting £48 was raised from our raffle to support young families via St John's Church
In June we collected children's coats to donate to Operation Orphan. We also supported the Long Eaton Food Bank with our donations of tinned tomatoes, tinned fruit, long life milk, dried potato, chocolate, crisps and snacks and coffee which were especially needed this month.
At our May meeting Lin collected donations of old towels, bedding and odd pieces of material.
These were given to a local group who visit Malawi where they have taught villagers how to make washable sanitary wear enabling them to have a good education.
Steph and Elaine collected McDonald's monopoly vouchers at the May meeting to donate to the Canaan Trust.
LEWI is an active supporter of local initiatives including the Long Eaton Carnival, the Canaan Trust, the Long Eaton and Sawley Food Bank and the Christmas Tree Festival.
In the picture above you can see just some of the brilliant hand made Christmas tree decorations made by LEWI members. Our tree will be decorated on Wednesday 29th November at St Lawrence's Church and will be on display until Sunday 3rd December.
LEWI members were asked to help with this year's Christmas Lunch in the Community on Wednesday 18th December at the Trinity Methodist Hall. Thanks to all who volunteered, it was a lovely morning and we served up a great lunch and desert. Home made fruit crumbles, bread and butter pudding, and chocolate brownies were very much enjoyed by all those who attended.
We took donations for charity at our November meeting. There was a mountain of donations including shampoo, shower gel, deodorant, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitising wipes, baby wipes, sanitary towels, tampons, hand cream, make-up samples, clean underwear, socks, snacks, hairbrushes and combs. Thanks to Gaynor for delivering our collection to The Arches charity .
LEWI members took part in Erewash Museum's project to make a Senzabura (1000 origami cranes) on Saturday 4th November. LEWI's contribution to the display is the u-shaped rainbow across the window.
The Senzabura was completed, just in time for remembrance Sunday, and can be seen in the Museum's War Gallery.
Anita, Margaret and Janet took up the plea for scarves to be knitted for The Derby Big Knit. These are now being distributed directly to the homeless and through St Werberghs Church in Derby City Centre.
At our meeting on Tuesday 3rd October we collected over 48kgs of food for the Food Bank. Many thanks to all our members for their continuing support.
Mo and Emma who took part in the Big Sleep Out at the end of April have raised over £460 for The Canaan Trust, very well done to them.
Naomi organised a coffee morning in aid of the Canaan Trust on Saturday 8th July at the Salvation Army Hall in Long Eaton. LEWI members supported this by making cakes for her to sell, donating prizes and dropping in for coffee and a chat. The total raised is over £360 - a fantastic achievement.
Fay, Avril, Steph and Rosa were involved in a project at St John's Church that is providing families who usually benefit from free school meals with a hot meal very Wednesday during the school summer holiday. LEWI members donated over 100 tins of baked beans at our meeting on Tuesday 1st August.
£37 was raised by selling scarves for the Denman Appeal, thanks to all who supported this.
